Today was probably one of the best host family days I’ve ever had. I got up early this morning and we left to pick up the other host families to go for breakfast at a place called “Café des Amis” (http://www.cafedesamis.com/) (http://www.cafedesamis.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16&Itemid=52)
a French Cajun restaurant/bar. There was a live zydeco band featuring accordion, washboard, fiddle, bass, guitar, and drums as well as vocals. They were taking numbers for tables and since there were 11 of us we just joined in and danced with most everyone else up front before a table was free. I ended up having a cheese omelet with crawfish au gratin; which was similar to the NFLD dish “cod au gratin” of which I am a big fan. I also had what are called “grits” which is basically like oatmeal but instead its made with corn. We did some tourist type stuff after that around the town of Breau Bridge; the Crawfish capital of Louisiana. Later in the day we visited the Myrtles Plantation (http://www.myrtlesplantation.com/) and took a ferry across the Mississippi river. We headed to my host mom’s sisters house which was itself on a 100 acer plantation lot. The plan was to take a tour of the swamp and to see the largest tree East of the Mississippi river. Unfortunately, the tire on the tractor got a flat so we never made it that far. Instead we had a bonfire and cooked some hotdogs and marshmallows. It was All Good™.
