Today was our first New Orleans CI day. Rising an hour earlier this morning, Andrew and I walked to the high school where we have our meetings; coffee in hand. We loaded the bus and headed out to our various projects. Some went to work with Habitat for Humanity, some with Volunteers of America, and some like myself who volunteered with the City Park. The N.O. City Park is one of the largest you’ll find in the US, spanning over 22 square miles. We had a press conference upon arriving there where we kicked off the Volunteer New Orleans city initiative. We were issued hatchets, hack saws, bow saws, lopping shears, and wheelbarrows and set out to clean up some of the scenic waterfront that was still full of debris from the hurricanes. (Rita+Katrina) Some people didn’t believe that this was the most helpful project to partake in; but we’ve realized after talking to people that the park is and always has been an oasis in the city, today its a place where people can go and forget about all of the hardships they’ve endured over the past 2 years. There was a far more elaborate explanation than that but I can’t recall the details of it at the moment. Anyhow, Its all Good™. We worled straight till about 4 in the afternoon where we loaded onto the bus and headed back to the school for our wrap up meeting. For Supper back with our host family, we went out to eat at a restraunt owned by the next oldest brother to our host dad. It was a bit of a “Surf’n’Turf” place but it was certainly all good. I had a seafood platter that had shrimp, catfish, oysters, crab, and some other stuff. For dessert we had bread pudding which is essentially like strawberry shortcake in appearence accept for that you replace the biscuit with french bread and the strawberries with a melted brown sugar in butter sauce. Mmm mmm tasty! More of the same tomorrow; Its all Good™.
